1) Styles.

 1a) Mini dresses ~      Sexy short and if you feel confident enough to wear these dresses you will always get noticed. Mini dresses originated from the mini skirt. The miniskirt is a skirt with a hemline well above the knees usually 20 cm about 8 inches or more above knee level.

 1b) Long dresses ~  Many forms of these are made some covering from neck to shoulder, some ladies that are conservative will go for these styles. But long dresses can be very sexy should you choose the right cuts. With the addition of tiny straps and plunging necklines or carefully placed long splits to show some leg whilst a lady walks or when she is dancing.
 1c)  Formal Dresses ~ These dresses are suitable for formal events, including weddings usually just below knee in length. Varieties of cuts are still used but usually bust is fully covered.
 1d) Casual dresses ~ Every girl probably has at least one of these dresses in their wardrobe, perfect for summer days these are casual and cool usually made for comfort, these dresses have less in the way of fancy details etc.
 1e) Cocktail dresses ~ The length of cocktail dresses varies depending on fashion. The length ranges from just above the knee to touching the ankle. When it is about two inches above the ankle it is called tea length and when it is almost touching the ankle it is called ballerina length, At semi-formal occasions, less elaborate, shorter-length cocktail dresses may be worn, when gentlemen are in dark suits. By the 1980s a dress was considered to be cocktail less by where the hem fell, but more by the level of sumptuousness the garment attained.
2) Venues / going out

2a) Clubbing ~  Known as clubwear dresses used for these nights out on the town would be dresses that are for the purpose of getting noticed. Usually with low bustlines and if you have the figure for it the will also be short  like a mini dress.
b) Holidays ~  Fun hot clubbing nights where you want to look good but stay cool at the same time, whatever your event on holiday the fabric your dresses are made from will be the most important factor. No girl likes to over heat, raising the temparture though is a completely different matter.

3) Materials

 3a) Silk Clubbing Dresses ~  Fine clingy material with very little stretch this fabric more associated with lingerie is good when used as a floaty parts of a dress rather than the main body.
 3b) Taffita Clubbing Dresses ~ More often used in prom dresses or ball gowns, great for the bodice area although heavy doesn't drape or flow.
 3c) Cotton Clubbing Dresses ~ Great material for the use in summer dresses or dresses that you want to keep cool in. Viscose is the best cotton to use although its important that the retailer know's what grade this is. Thin grades can make dresses see through.
 3d) Chiffon Clubbing Dresses ~ Rarely used for dresses as this material only has any stretch when cut on the bias, Woven high quality fabric and will usually be quite expensive. Floaty light fabric which is better when used in association with another fabric.
 3e) Soft touch Clubbing Dresses ~ Great fabric for dresses as this has so much stretch, this can be patterned, feels great against ladies skin. Again different grades available and retailers should be aware that the cheaper versions can also be transparent.
 3f)  I.T.Y Clubbing Dresses ~  Poor quality fabric, cheap and nasty avoid at all costs.
 3g) Lace Clubbing Dresses ~  Lace dresses are lovely they really usually hang well and most laces are stretchy, although try to avoid laces that have been massed produced to reduce costs, these will be used by companies that produce poor quality products.

4) Cuts.

 This is the most important factor about the dress as good quality dresses will always fit in the right places, the attention to this is often overlooked by companies as they usually will be looking for hanger appeal rather than fit. This is the advantage you have buying online when you see a dress that is being modeled. Ask yourself this - how many times have you been in a shop and liked the look of something only to try it on and it fits nothing like you imagined. ( These usually end up in the sale's)
 
5) Prints

 Every season new prints come out and when they do evry manufacturer jumps on the bandwagon, before you know where you are the print has gone out of fashion and your dress becomes so "last year". this is the major problem with prints and some colours if i'm honest.
My advise has always been if you know that colours suit you stick to them.
 
6) Prices

 It's true what they say "you only get what you pay for" Each company will work to different standards and if you like their standard keep using them but don't be scared to try others. If something is reduced its because the retailer can't sell them, its undesirable or gone out of fashion.
If dresses are cheap then they usually will be made cheap, we all want value for money and some less well known companies will charge less for good quality items by cutting profits in order to attract more sales, these are genuinely good value.
7) Seasons.
 
 7a) Spring ~ an exciting time of setting the tone for the seasons ahead.
 7b) Summer ~ Continuation and eleberation of the spring collections.
 7c) Autumn ~ using the seasons theme with warmer materials.
 7d) Winter ~ Designers work on their styles for spring.

8) Standing out.

It really is a case of knowing what suits you, If you have a dress you love and looks good on you then expand on this look, It may be that a formal dress or a mini dress suits you best, try to work this into the occassion you are attending. Work out the factors that you need and your dress you choose will be more likely the one that will be just what you wanted.
